Before you go
Respect the monarchy
The royal family is deeply revered and lèse-majesté laws are strict. Speak respectfully and stand for the royal anthem in cinemas.
Dress for temples
Cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes where asked. Carry a light scarf and trousers.
Sidestep scams
Ignore “temple closed” tips, cheap tuk-tuk tours and gem shops. Walk on politely.
Use Grab or Bolt
Ride-hailing apps show the fare upfront. With taxis, insist on the meter.
Respect the heat
Even in December the sun is strong. Drink often, wear a hat and rest at midday.
Drink bottled water
Tap water is not recommended for drinking; ice in restaurants is usually factory-made.
Tipping
Not expected at street stalls. Round up for taxis and leave around 10% where no service charge is added.
Cash and QR
Carry small notes for markets and boats; cards work in malls. Thai QR payment suits locals more than visitors.
No e-cigarettes
Vapes are illegal to bring in, buy or use, with heavy fines. Leave them at home.
Get a transit card
A Rabbit card covers the BTS; the MRT takes contactless bank cards.
Feet and heads
Never point feet at people or Buddha images, and do not touch anyone’s head.
Stay connected
Buy a tourist SIM or eSIM at the airport; WhatsApp and LINE are widely used.
Carry a copy of your passport, keep valuables close in markets and use licensed transport after dark.
