Before you go
Ease into the altitude
At around 2,240 m, start gently. Drink water and take breaks.
Plan around September rain
Mild days and cool, wet evenings: bring a jumper, waterproof and grippy shoes.
Use trusted transport
Use authorised airport taxis or trusted apps in town. Verify drivers; check airport pickup rules.
Keep districts together
Distances and traffic add up. Choose one area per half-day and leave a buffer between bookings.
Stay connected
Set up a compatible SIM or eSIM; use WhatsApp to confirm bookings and dietary needs.
Keep belongings close
Use a closed bag in busy markets and on transport. Avoid displaying valuables and choose well-used routes.
Prepare for earthquakes
Check SASSLA app settings and your hotel’s safety plan. Follow local instructions; do not rely only on an app.
Check museum Mondays
Many museums close on Mondays. Reserve Casa Azul and Barragán ahead; verify each venue’s current access.
Tip for good service
Around 10–15% is customary in restaurants. Check the bill first and keep small notes handy.
Choose safe drinking water
Use sealed or reliably filtered water. Choose freshly cooked food and explain allergies or dietary needs clearly.
Carry pesos and cards
Cards are useful; small peso notes help at markets. Use bank ATMs and keep a backup payment method.
Use a little Spanish
A translation app helps at markets and in taxis. Ask before portraits; respect places of worship.
Plan a safe return: use trusted transport after dark, keep valuables discreet and follow local advice. Check regional warnings before day trips.
