Before you go
Check your visa
Many nationalities can get an eVisa or visa-free entry; check Royal Oman Police guidance for your passport.
Dress modestly
Cover shoulders and knees in public; swimwear is for beaches and pools only.
Drive with care
Speed cameras are everywhere and fines are strict. Keep to limits and never use your phone.
Use OTaxi
Book metered taxis through the OTaxi app or your hotel; agree fares first with street taxis.
Plan for Friday
Mornings are quiet; many shops and museums open later. Use it for the beach or a drive.
Tipping
Not expected but appreciated: round up taxis and leave about 10% where service is not included.
Respect the sun
Even in December, UV is strong. Wear a hat and sunscreen; carry water on every outing.
Carry some cash
Cards work widely; small rial notes help in the souq, at parking and for tips.
Ask before photos
Always ask before photographing people, especially women; avoid military and palace guards.
Mind Friday prayers
Around midday on Friday, roads near mosques fill and some businesses close briefly.
Stay connected
A local SIM or eSIM from Omantel or Ooredoo makes maps and taxi apps easy.
Tap water
Treated and generally safe, but most visitors prefer bottled or filtered water.
Public displays of affection, loud behaviour and drinking in public are frowned upon. Courtesy goes a long way.
